Essential Oils for Healthy Hair

I have finally gotten around to writing this highly requested post on using essential oils for hair care. This is just one of the many uses essential oils have. Today I'm going to share my personal favourite essential oils to use for healthy hair.

As someone with long and thick hair I have used many commercial AND natural hair products, they are often expensive, filled with toxic ingredients and NOT so effective. I have enjoyed experimenting with the use of essential oils in my own hair care routine in the last four years. What I have found is that essential oils are a great affordable, natural and effective replacement for pretty much all the products I used to keep in my bathroom cupboard.

I no longer use anti-dandruff shampoo, Moroccan styling serums or fancy shining products, essential oils have replaced them all!

There are many ways you can use essential oils to support healthy hair, you can add a couple drops to your shampoo to nourish your scalp, make a delicious hair serum with essential oils and carrier oil of choice or simply place a couple drops of essential oil directly to your hair. It's that easy! Read until the very end for recipes.

I love that essential oils work to reduce dry, greasy, oily hair while supporting our emotional and physical health.

My favourite oils for hair care are:

As an essential oil that is high in it's cleansing and purifying properties I love to use 1-2 drops of Tea Tree in the palm of my hand with my doTERRA shampoo to clean my scalp. This well known essential oil works at cleansing the scalp and ensuring all grime and dirt is removed. Tea Tree is also great at repelling lice, make up a DIY hairspray and spray on your children's hair, inside their hat and on the car seat daily.

My cousin Irini shared this tip with me, once you have shampoo and conditioned your hair while it's still damp add 3 drops of peppermint to your scalp, give your scalp a good massage. The menthol from the peppermint will give you a tingling, cooling sensation and stimulate healthy hair growth and nourishment. Once you've tried this there is NO going back! You can do this at any time of the day to reduce head tension, promote healthy hair stimulation and cleanse your scalp.

A must have essential oil in every home, Lavender has MANY uses in your haircare routine. For soft, thick and nourishing hair apply a couple drops of Lavender essential oil to your conditioner, make your own leave in treatment or hair serum to massage into damp hair. Lavender hydrates the hair and reduces the hair loss. You can add Lavender to any DIY hair product for its calming and relaxing aroma.

A strong scented and thick wood oil, Cedarwood is incredible at nourishing dry hair and promoting healthy hair growth. I love to apply thick oils like Cedarwood straight to my the ends of my hair, I simply add a few drops to the ends of my fingers and massage into my ends my hair. Alternatively I will add a base of carrier oil such as Argan or Coconut - add my desired essential oils of choice, mix then massage into my hair.

If you love the thought of using expensive products in your hair then look no further - this one's for you! Sandalwood is a beautiful thick and syrup like essential oil, it is one of my favourites to use similarly to Cedarwood as a serum, hair styler or shine oil. I add a few drops to the ends of my hair while its damp or just after I have used a heat styler on it to restore hydration and add a beautiful shine.

Some popular recipes..use the same recipe just swap the oils depending on the results you are wanting.

+ Choice of Carrier Oil (my favourite is Argan or Coconut)

+ Essential Oils fo choice (Peppermint, Lavender, Cedarwood)

Combine in a bowl or dropper bottle then apply to the ends of your hair either damp or dry. I generally use a teaspoon of carrier oil and 6-10 drops of essential oil per use. You can reduce the amount or add more depending on how much hair you have. Experiment with how your hair feels and do what works best for you.

+ 50 ml glass bottle

+ 10 drops Tea Tree eo

+ 10 drops Lavender eo (or any other floral oil)

+ 5 drops Rosemary eo

+ Witch Hazel

Add essential oils to the spray bottle then fill halfway with water, you can add a squeeze of coconut oil for hydrating and nourishing purposes then fill the rest with witch hazel (optional). If you don't have witch hazel just use water. Shake bottle before each use and spray on hair, inside hats and car seats daily to repel lice.

Some other essential oils I love to add straight to my hair before leaving the house are: Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Grapefruit, Patchouli, Clary Calm and Salubelle. When it comes to using essential oils there is no right or wrong! If you like the smell of an essential oil then add it to your haircare routine..chances are it will have some benefit.

I will also give mention to my FAVOURITE doTERRA hair product: the Root to Tip Serum. I use this product after every single wash and absolutely LOVE the way it makes my hair smell and feel. Featuring Lavender, Peppermint, Cedarwood, Marjoram, Niaouli, Rosemary and Eucalyptus it nourishes, hydrates and promotes shiny, healthy hair! Apply to the ends of your hair while damp or dry.
